Two motorcycle riders suffered serious, life-altering injuries after crashing into the back of a van stopped at a red light in Spanaway, an unincorporated community in Pierce County, Washington. The collision happened Monday night, September 14, 2026, at the intersection of Spanaway Loop Road South and 116th Street South. Deputies arriving at the scene found the motorcycle’s driver and his passenger lying in the roadway, and both were rushed to a local hospital for emergency treatment. The driver of the van was not injured.

According to KIRO 7 News Seattle, which cited the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred at approximately 7:45 p.m. and involved a 69-year-old man driving the motorcycle and a 73-year-old woman riding as his passenger. Investigators say preliminary findings indicate the motorcyclist was allegedly driving recklessly before striking the rear of the stopped van. The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit continues to investigate the circumstances of the crash. Deputies urged drivers to slow down and stay alert, warning that reckless driving can have life-altering consequences for everyone on the road.

What the Law Says

Washington law makes reckless driving a misdemeanor under RCW 46.61.500, defined as driving a vehicle in willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property. Investigators say preliminary findings point to reckless driving by the motorcyclist before the crash in Spanaway. A citation or conviction for reckless driving can be important evidence of negligence in a related personal injury claim. Washington law enforcement agencies routinely cite this statute when investigating serious-injury collisions like this one.

Washington follows a pure comparative fault rule under RCW 4.22.005, meaning an injured person can still recover damages even if they were partly responsible for a crash, with their compensation reduced by their percentage of fault. This matters in a collision like this one, where investigators are still determining how much fault lies with the motorcyclist, the van driver, or other factors. Comparative fault rules allow injured parties, including the motorcycle’s passenger, to pursue compensation while liability is still being sorted out. No fault has been officially assigned as the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit continues its investigation.
