A driver behind the wheel of a reported stolen vehicle slammed into a King County Metro bus early Wednesday morning just south of Kent, Washington, and died from the injuries. The King County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded around 7 a.m. to the crash at South 277th Street and 83rd Avenue South, an area between Kent and Auburn. Several passengers aboard the bus were injured in the impact, though the bus driver was not hurt. The road was shut down for several hours while investigators processed the scene.

According to Seattle Weekly, the stolen car likely hit the bus at a high rate of speed, and the driver of the stolen vehicle did not survive. Authorities have not released the driver’s name, age or hometown, nor where the vehicle was stolen from. KCSO spokesperson Brandyn Hull said the Major Accident Response team is handling the investigation. FOX 13 Seattle reported that multiple bus passengers were transported to a nearby hospital following the crash.

What the Law Says

Washington’s reckless driving statute makes it a crime to operate a vehicle in willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property, which covers high-speed collisions like this one. When a driver’s reckless operation of a stolen or any other vehicle injures bystanders or passengers, that conduct can also establish civil liability for the harm caused. Injured victims may pursue compensation even when the at-fault driver did not survive the crash.

Washington follows a pure comparative fault rule, meaning an injured person can recover damages even if they were partly at fault, with their recovery reduced by their percentage of responsibility. In a crash involving multiple parties, such as a stolen vehicle, its owner, and a transit operator, this rule allows fault to be apportioned among everyone whose actions contributed to the collision. It plays a central role in determining how injured bus passengers can recover for their losses.
