A tractor-trailer driver has been charged with manslaughter after a crash killed a Garland woman on an Interstate 30 ramp in Mesquite, Texas, early Friday morning, September 4, 2026. Police say 33-year-old Lisa Maldonado was driving a Chevrolet Equinox SUV when it collided with a Freightliner pulling a 53-foot trailer on the ramp connecting westbound I-30 to northbound I-635. Maldonado was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The truck driver, 39-year-old Khasan Begbaev of Brooklyn, New York, was not injured and was taken into custody.

According to WFAA, Mesquite police say Begbaev now faces one count of manslaughter in connection with the crash. The Mesquite Police Department said in a release that its Traffic Unit’s investigation into the collision is ongoing, and officials have not released additional details about how the two vehicles came to collide on the interstate ramp. The crash is one of several serious wrecks involving commercial trucks on North Texas highways this year. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact Mesquite police.

What the Law Says

Texas charges a driver with manslaughter under Penal Code Section 19.04 when the driver recklessly causes another person’s death, a standard prosecutors can meet without proving intent to kill. In fatal collisions between commercial trucks and passenger vehicles, investigators typically examine speed, following distance, and whether the truck driver was fatigued or otherwise failed to maintain control. A manslaughter conviction is a second-degree felony, but the criminal case proceeds separately from any civil claim the victim’s family may bring.

Under the Texas Wrongful Death Act, Civil Practice and Remedies Code Section 71.002, the surviving spouse, children, and parents of someone killed by another’s negligence or wrongful act can bring a civil claim for their losses. This claim is separate from any criminal manslaughter case and can proceed regardless of its outcome. Damages available under the statute can include lost financial support, loss of companionship, and the mental anguish suffered by surviving family members.

This summary is general information, not legal advice. Every case depends on its specific facts.
