Two people were hurt Friday morning when a two-vehicle collision on Grand Avenue near Richard Lane in Lake Elsinore snapped a Southern California Edison power pole and dropped live electrical lines across the roadway. The California Highway Patrol reported the crash at about 10:30 a.m. on September 4, 2026. One of the vehicles veered into the utility pole, which broke at its base, while two occupants of the second vehicle were taken to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar with injuries described as minor to moderate. CHP officers and Riverside County sheriff’s deputies shut down both directions of Grand Avenue while crews cleared the downed lines.

According to Patch, the motorist who struck the power pole allegedly fled the scene on foot, and officers and deputies were searching the area for that driver. Patch reported that Southern California Edison said only a few properties lost power and that technicians were expected on scene around noon to begin repairs. The Riverside County Fire Department and CHP both responded to the call, Patch reported. The California Highway Patrol is handling the collision investigation, and no cause has been officially confirmed.

What the Law Says

California Vehicle Code 20001 requires any driver involved in a collision that injures another person to stop immediately at the scene and provide identification and aid. Leaving before fulfilling that duty is a felony-level hit-and-run offense punishable by state prison or county jail time. When a driver flees an injury crash, that flight can also be presented to a civil jury as evidence bearing on fault. Investigators here have said the driver who struck the pole allegedly left on foot, and the CHP investigation remains open.

California Vehicle Code 21658 requires drivers on roadways divided into marked lanes to keep their vehicle entirely within a single lane and to move out of it only after determining the movement can be made safely. A driver who drifts out of the lane and strikes another vehicle or a fixed object such as a utility pole may be found negligent for violating that rule. In California, that violation can support a claim of negligence per se, shifting the burden onto the driver to explain the departure. The CHP has not officially stated what caused the vehicle to leave its lane.
