One person died and another was hospitalized after a two-vehicle crash involving an 18-wheeler shut down multiple eastbound lanes of the Katy Freeway at Bunker Hill in Houston on Wednesday, September 2, 2026. The Houston Police Department responded to the scene shortly before noon, where video showed a badly damaged SUV wedged underneath the tractor-trailer. Eastbound lanes stayed closed for hours while crews worked to clear the wreckage, backing up traffic on one of the city’s busiest freeways. By Wednesday evening, HPD said the cause of the crash and the identity of the person who died had not yet been determined.
According to ABC13 Houston, police had not released the name of the person killed or said what led to the crash as investigators continued working the scene. Click2Houston reported that Houston police described the SUV as wedged underneath the tractor-trailer and said at least one person was taken to a nearby hospital. HPD said the investigation into the crash remains active.
