A 15-year-old passenger was killed early Sunday morning when a BMW X5 rear-ended a GMC Sierra pickup that was towing a trailer carrying an all-terrain vehicle on southbound Interstate 215 near Cactus Avenue in Riverside. The impact caused both the BMW and the ATV to overturn, and the BMW spun out of control into the northbound lanes of the freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol. The teen passenger died at the scene, while the BMW’s driver and two other passengers suffered injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital. The GMC’s driver was not hurt. CHP officers arrested the BMW’s driver on suspicion of felony driving under the influence of alcohol.
According to Patch, the crash happened around 3:35 a.m. Sunday, August 23, and investigators say the BMW was traveling at a high rate of speed before it struck the back of the GMC Sierra. Patch reported the arrested driver was identified as Evelyn Odalma Guzman Munguia, 29, of Perris, who was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside on suspicion of felony DUI after being briefly hospitalized for her own injuries. The identity of the 15-year-old victim has not been released by authorities. The CHP Riverside Accident Investigation Unit is asking anyone who witnessed the collision to come forward.
