One person is dead after a vehicle struck a pedestrian Thursday night in southeast Austin, according to Austin-Travis County EMS. Medics responded at about 9:18 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 20, 2026, to the ramp connecting westbound East State Highway 71 with northbound US 183, the Bastrop Highway, near Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
As reported by CBS Austin, ATCEMS medics pronounced one adult dead at the scene. The agency asked drivers to expect delays and use alternate routes while responders worked; the scene was cleared by about 4:30 a.m. Friday, according to the TxDOT incidents page cited by CBS Austin. The identity of the person killed has not been released, and authorities have not said what led to the crash or whether the driver remained at the scene. The Austin Police Department typically handles fatal crash investigations in the city, and no arrest, citation or finding of fault has been announced.
