A 14-year-old boy riding an e-bike died after being hit by a Tesla at Olney Street and Balboa Avenue in Pacific Beach, San Diego, on a Saturday night in September 2026. Police said the teen was riding north on Olney Street and turned onto Balboa Avenue against a red light, and the driver stopped and called paramedics. The teen was taken to a hospital, where he died. No charges had been reported against the driver at the time of that coverage.
NBC 7 San Diego reported that families gathered at Pacific Beach Middle School on a Sunday for a free e-bike safety class held in the teen’s honor. The event was organized by the office of County Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer with groups including the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition, and teens received free helmets and lessons on e-bike rules and responsible riding. NBC 7 said more than 50 families signed up and that Rady Children’s Hospital reported pediatric e-bike trauma cases rising from three in 2021 to more than 260 in 2025.

E-bike safety classes held for teens in honor of 14-year-old killed in crash
California Vehicle Code section 21456 and related signal laws require road users to obey traffic signals, and drivers must also exercise due care toward other people on the road. When a collision happens, investigators look at who had the signal, speed, and attention. California follows pure comparative fault, so a person’s recovery may be reduced, but not barred, by their own share of responsibility.
California Code of Civil Procedure section 377.60 allows certain family members to bring a wrongful death claim when a person is killed by another’s wrongful act or neglect. Claims have strict filing deadlines, so families often speak with a lawyer early. Beverly Law offers free consultations and works on a no fee unless we win basis.
