UPDATE — October 14, 2026

A motorcyclist died on Monday, October 12, 2026, after a crash on northbound I-5 near South Albro Place, next to Boeing Field in south Seattle. The Washington State Patrol says a motorcycle, a van and a semi-truck were involved. Troopers say the rider was merging lanes and struck the back of a van before crashing into the middle lane, where the semi was traveling. The investigation is ongoing.

KOMO reported that northbound I-5 reopened after the deadly motorcycle and semi crash shut down four lanes. FOX 13 Seattle reported that the four right lanes were blocked for several hours and that all northbound lanes reopened around 3:45 p.m., and KIRO 7 reported that the rider was an 18-year-old from Granite Falls. No name has been released, and the crash remains under investigation, so the cause has not been determined.

A motorcyclist died Monday, October 12, 2026, after a crash involving a semi-truck on northbound Interstate 5 in Seattle, near South Albro Place and Boeing Field. Multiple right-hand lanes were closed while troopers worked the scene, causing a backup that stretched for miles. According to a Washington State Patrol press memo reported by KIRO, the motorcyclist was allegedly changing lanes, clipped the back of another vehicle, and then went under a semi in an adjacent lane.

KOMO reported that northbound I-5 reopened after the deadly crash, noting that WSDOT said one lane near South Albro Place remained closed for a time after the initial reopening. KOMO’s headline cites four lanes shut down, while KIRO reported three lanes blocked, so the exact number varies by outlet. KIRO reported that the Washington State Patrol is still investigating the cause. What the Law Says

Washington’s rules of the road require a vehicle to be driven within a single lane and not moved from that lane until the driver has first ascertained that the movement can be made with safety. A driver who allegedly changes lanes without making sure it is safe may be found at fault for resulting collisions.

Under Washington’s wrongful death statute, a personal representative may bring a claim when a person dies because of another’s wrongful act or neglect, for the benefit of certain surviving family members. Washington also applies comparative fault, so responsibility can be shared among those involved and any recovery is reduced by the injured person’s percentage of fault.
