One person was killed and another was hospitalized with major injuries in a two-vehicle crash on the northbound Golden State (5) Freeway at the Los Feliz Boulevard off-ramp in Los Angeles, according to the California Highway Patrol. As reported by MyNewsLA, the crash happened around 8:25 a.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2026, when a Toyota Corolla sedan veered into the right shoulder, then crossed the lanes to its left and struck the concrete center divider.

Updated August 24, 2026: The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office has identified the man killed as Cruz Saldana Munoz, 36, who died at the scene of multiple blunt-force traumatic injuries; his city of residence was not available, according to MyNewsLA. Citing a CHP news release, MyNewsLA reported that a Toyota Corolla traveling north in the No. 4 lane veered into the right shoulder, then veered left across the lanes and struck the concrete center divider, and that the driver lost control and hit a Honda Pilot, propelling both vehicles to the right shoulder, where the Corolla struck a concrete wall. It was unclear whether Saldana Munoz was in the Toyota or the Honda.

After striking the center divider, the Corolla hit a Honda Pilot SUV, propelling both vehicles to the right shoulder, where the Corolla then struck a concrete wall, the CHP said, as reported by MyNewsLA. One person was pronounced dead at the scene and another person was taken to a hospital with major injuries; authorities did not immediately say which vehicle each victim was in. Lanes were blocked while officers worked at the scene, according to the CHP incident log. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the CHP’s Central Los Angeles office, and no findings of fault have been reported.

What the Law Says

California Code of Civil Procedure § 377.60 allows certain surviving family members — such as a spouse, domestic partner, or children — to bring a wrongful death claim when a person is killed as the result of another party’s wrongful act or negligence.

Everyone is responsible for injuries caused to others by their want of ordinary care or skill. In freeway collisions, injured victims and the families of those killed may pursue compensation from any driver or other party whose negligence contributed to the crash.
